steAm and Makerspaces

makerspacesessionApril162016At today’s #edcampham I took in a Makerspace session where participants shared their ideas about creative spaces in their classrooms and schools. It was a great discussion and I came away with the following understandings:

  1. STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education is not nearly as wonderful as STEAM (science, technology, engineering, ARTS, and math education). Indeed!
  2. We ought to have ubiquitous opportunities for authentic creation and making of things that matter
  3. Beware of the “let’s go to the makerspace” place which could turn into the old-fashioned “let’s go to the computer-lab” boxed-in-thinking
  4. children are great makers…just need space and stuff to play with
  5. MakerSTANCE is makerSPACE enhanced

Grateful for:

  • Ancaster Sr Public where my three kids had a great education a few years back and where I, today, also learned much
  • My family of schools and the learning from #FOS1Learn
  • Leadership 1 and the joy I have when I see people from my tables flourishing!

Curious about:

  • How to advance math learning when it ‘seems’ that learner confidence is low
  • How to avoid drift in entropy now that we’ve got so much traction in our staff personalized professional learning agenda.
  • How to merge the best of CPS, RJ, Cognitive Coaching, Adaptive Schools, MindsUP, Growth MindSet, and Appreciative Inquiry into everyday tools that are accessible, usable, and flexible for multiple situations.
