Quotable Quotes (QQ) from Hargreaves

journalofprocapitalIt’s one of those Saturdays when I’m by the fire being lazy and somewhat distracted by Twitter. I have a healthy and vigorous tweetdeck focussed on ed-trends, among other noble pursuits, so don’t feel the least bit guilty since it’s really a great way to invest some learning time.

And, one tweet leads to another, to another…and eventually I land on a link to a new journal titled Professional Capital & Community, which seems to be significantly connected to Andy Hargreaves and Michael Fullan. So, I browse a bit more, get lost on some bunny trails and then find a list of 100 ‘quotable quotes’ (QQs) from Hargreaves, ideas that span the many years of his influential leadership in education.

I can only hope that someday I have maybe one or two QQs in my life, but for now, here are a few of my favourites from Hargreaves, available at: http://www.andyhargreaves.com/

#1 ….widen [the] circle of learning, not to circle [the]wagons…

#5 On technology: The teacher is mightier than the mouse.

#6 If we’re all on the same page, no one’s reading the whole book.

#37 On being: Arrogance is the conjoined twin of ignorance.  (this one remind me of someone named Donald)

#50 Schools that cannot tolerate interesting & enthusiastic eccentrics who work better alone than together are devoid of flexibility & spirit

#56 *Every* learner has special needs.

#60 Professional trust is a process, not a state.

#63 Blame and betrayal are the emotional enemies of improvement.

#72 Courageous leadership is not fearless leadership. What makes you a leader is how you deal with your fears.

#87 Teachers [educators] who *believe* they can make a real difference in their students lives REALLY do.

#93 Students become good learners when they are in the classes of teachers who are good learners.

#95 Implementation of technological change must involve critics as well as advocates.

#96 On government & unions: the only thing worse than blind trust is blind mistrust.

#99 A brainscan cannot interpret itself and neither can a data dashboard in education.

mscontantrewiredsketchGrateful for:

  • Rewired 2016 at HWDSB — a terrific day of learning on March 4th.
  • Suzie (@smilinovich)  and Mark (@OYearbook) for being such amazing co-presenters
  • a wonderful sketchnoter (@mscontant), who inspires me as shown in this rendering of #rewired2016, a summary

Curious about:

  • Minecraft and how it can increase student learning across all subjects and ages
  • the ‘Pencil’ stylus that I’m thinking about getting — it sounds like an attractive investmentpencil53
