At the “Building Communities of Belonging” Conference I took in all the sessions possible re Autism and related topics. Amongst the great ideas offered were three book suggestions. With the help of Amazon, I’m now happily in possession of the following picture books which are the best descriptions ever of students I see every day. I finally understand!
All Cats Have Asperger Syndrome takes a playful look at Asperger Syndrome (AS), drawing inspiration from the feline world in a way that will strike a chord with all those who are familiar with AS. Delightful color photographs of cats bring to life familiar characteristics such as sensitive hearing, scampering at the first sign of being stroked and particular eating habits.
Through engaging text and full-color photographs, this book shows neurotypicals how Aspies see and experience the world.
Each page brings to light traits that many Aspies have in common, from sensitive hearing and an aversion to bright lights and strong smells, to literal thinking and difficulty understanding social rules and reading body language and facial expressions. At the same time, the book highlights and celebrates the unique characteristics that make those with Asperger’s Syndrome special.
All Dogs Have ADHD takes an inspiring and affectionate look at Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), using images and ideas from the canine world to explore a variety of traits that will be instantly recognizable to those who are familiar with ADHD. This delightful book combines humor with understanding to reflect the difficulties and joys of raising a child with ADHD and celebrates what it means to be considered ‘different.’
Grateful for:
- CH and the wonderful people who show me that inclusion isn’t good enough; BELONGING is better
- all my educator friends who took me up on an invitation to BELONG
Curious about:
- Where are my kids??? I’ve got three of them somewhere around the world — Slovenia to Thailand to BC?
