Summer 2013

ThisAmericanLifeHarperHighBack again….summer time reading, viewing and learning.

In this multi-part podcast, Ira Glass and others report about a gang-infused, violence-trending, gun-filled school and neighbourhood. I’m very curious about what motivates teens to ‘belong’ to a group, even if the costs are high and risky. What strategies might I employ in an attempt to connect with students and try to understand their worlds, and then eventually try to keep school as safe as possible.

Curious about:

~ what would the teens I know think about this message?

~ what approaches best open up thinking and talking, especially with teens who want to belong and feel safe but who may not trust adults

~ what choices would I make if I lived near Harper High?

Grateful for:

~ another school year finished and many more grads walking across the stage

~ my comfy life

~ my opportunity to go to Haiti and compare/contrast/observe
