Victory Gardens

We went to a house party last night and I chatted with a retiree who volunteers at a local church where they have set aside several acres for vegetable gardens.

Yes indeed!

And the produce goes to local food banks. I’m impressed by this concept which was founded on the WWII strategy for equipping the troops….individual citizens by the hundreds tilled up their yards and planted grains and vegetables in order to keep a supply of food available during tough times. These Victory Gardens, as they became known, represented the best of individual contributions to a larger cause.

Similarly, this church, and the man I met who leads the entire enterprise, are fighting poverty and want to claim victory over hunger. What an incredible and practical way to work out one’s faith. There are no words, just wholesome, fresh food for people who need it. That speaks volumes!

Grateful for:

  • being on the 22nd floor of the Stelco building at 5:30 a.m. watching peregrine chicks play, fly by, and get stronger

Curious about:

  • how to learn French
