Downside of Pot and CannaBIZ

CBC has two interesting TV shows on tonight, both of which relate to things I’m learning every day at school…from the perspective of watching teens who are users, even addicted users.

It’s all about business, big business! But it’s also about teens and their substance use/abuse additions. And, David Suzuki on tonight’s ‘Downside of High’ episode of The Nature of Things, confirmed what the research now says…there’s a 4x increase chance of getting severe mental health issues, schizophrenia included, if you a teen user of marijuana.

And on CannaBiz, the show that followed Suzuki’s, I learned how the marajuana industry is flourishing in Canada, particularly in Grand Forks where we some time ago had business connections (no, not that particular industry!) and vacationed as a family.

Canada’s $20 billion-dollar marijuana industry is now at a violent crossroads between crime and commerce. Impossible to police, yet steadily gaining public acceptance, the cannabis industry is now so vast and vital to Canada’s national economy that it can no longer be ignored.

Interesting fact….”because the economy in Ontario is on the downslide, there are fewer people buying Cannabis and many more producing it.”

Watch the trailer and then if you’re interested, there’s a repeat show on Friday, January 29 at 10 p.m. There are lots of issues including the role of cannabis for medical purposes.

Grateful for:

  • A wonderful colleague, an important part of my Personal Learning Network,  who has shared incredible staff development ideas…freely, graciously, generously
  • a hope for the future, even when someone my own daughter’s age has been diagnosed with Hodgkins
  • A___ and her wonderful rocking chair, the showpiece of our professional development day

Curious about:

  • why do I always wake up SO early on big days, especially when I have to be a leader?
