Red eye

I know I said I want to learn something new each day. It’s a bit hard to do that when you’re not exactly sure when the ‘day’ is. You see, somewhere inthe last 24 hours I’ve gone from PST to EST and who knows when ‘today’ actually happened.

But I do know that I learned a few things.

First, sometimes very strong tail winds make the WestJet Boeing 737 fly so fast that it could get to its destination way too early. What’s bad about that you ask?

Well, it’s bad only if you want to get to Toronto where they have a 6 a.m. start time for the airport. If you are unlucky enough to arrive early, you’ll get a lot of people angry with you (neighbours, officials, government) and you’ll have to pay a big fine!  Indeed, you don’ t want to do that.

So, believe it or not, our departure from Vancouver was delayed so that on this trip with strong tail winds (making us go faster than planned) we would actually arrive AFTER 6 a.m. and not incur the wrath of the airport authorities.

Second, I learned that some people, no matter how hard you try to please them, just choose to be cranky. A fellow passenger upon greeting the woman who had come to meet him, bad-mouthed the airline for always being late. Oh no…no nice ‘hello are you’ but rather a terse “that airline is just awful….they were so late leaving Vancouver…isn’t that awful.”

Ironically, the plane had arrived 5 minutes prior to the published time. Some people just can’t get the joy going.

Grateful for:

  • the WestJet care-antee
  • being able to stay awake all day at school even though I’d had little sleep
  • book club and good thinking people

Curious about:

  • what’s the math involved in figuring out the tail winds and the expected arrival time in Toronto?
  • why does Toronto have that rule in the first place?
