School websites

Today Holly and I and others from the district met for a focus group about school websites. Our school’s site is barely passable…and I can say less than positive statement because I’m one who built the site in one of those urgent late-night sessions when we had a deadline and needed to post a newsletter.

Indeed, sometime necessity is the mother of invention, but more often than not the inventions are half-baked. Later, when there’s time to think, it’s possible to improve and refine. So that’s the stage where we are right now. We know it’s not a great site, and we also know that the district is going to provide new tools. Yea!

So, give us a month, then come back and see if this school website has improved any.glendalebanner

Today I learned that we made the right decision to NOT hire a professional website person to build a one-off rogue site. In the end, even though we have to wait, it wil be worth it in the end. Many valuable things are like that. Invest now, wait for a bit, and then see the payoff.

Grateful for:

  • corporate communications at the district and a graphic designer
  • getting those Youth Advisory papers to a potential but as yet undiscovered young female leader. She will bring her considerable expertise re bullying to a city-wide group that really needs to hear her perspective. Rather than preaching to her to shape up, maybe she can tell others what it’s really like to be both a teen bully and a bullied teen.
  • computer technicians who know how to fix things

Curious about:

  • Rapid Web Developer and whether or not our school site will look great
  • whether or not the instructions for Interim Reports will make sense to people…I hope so
